Aspirations

I am constantly finding parts of aspirational projects that were abandoned or otherwise lost to time. While cleaning up my hobby desk, I found four bottles of DecoArt craft paint and have no idea what I was intending to do with them... (black, white, red, purple - so a very basic set of colors that isn't helpful) Reddit helpfully let me know that while it's physically possibly to thin it down to airbrush consistency, it's not fun anywhere in the process. So that's out.

I also have an olive and a grey that I will someday tinker with and mix to repair worn spots on a wooden figure, but I've been putting that off for like a decade now and intend to put it off for a bit longer. I suppose the black and white can stick around for that?

(I guess these can all stick around for the hangar/manger if I ever get back to that? Not so much the red, but maybe the others can get used...)

The dining room table is also covered in zine-binding/related debris. I need to see what's there and what needs to be bound and do some little projects when I'm otherwise just watching something or being a mushroom.

But right now I'm a mushroom because it's too fucking hot.

Delightful news, everybody!

Turns out my bff Elly whomst I watch mystery shows with (previously on x-men) has never seen Due South! This show is responsible for me enjoying mystery shows today, along with Warrick Brown of CSI.

Immediately I had a viewing plan in mind!

While I do enjoy seasons 1-2, Paul Haggis and his sex pest ways made anything involving women pretty rough, so immediately I decided all we'd watch of that was Pilot, 1st episode with the ghost of Fraser's father, and the flashback episode. Then we'd skip to the much more palatable (although shorter seasoned because it became a Canadian show starting then) s3-4 with New Ray.

DID YOU KNOW - that Due South has been on several streaming platforms so far and keeps changing them? It took me a while to finally find its current home on D+. I started with Netflix, Tubi, and Amazon before tracking it down.

It was not on the Canadian streaming service, Crave, afaik.

We also watched Kpop Demon Hunters (hope this doesn't awaken something in me) that was a real jam, Death Valley (delightful mystery show set in Wales all the Welsh accents I could want), and 2x Death In Paradise where I finally got on board with the Camille/Richard ship on the last episode before the final episode of season 2 and anyone who is familiar with the show to a certain degree probably just got a dark laugh.

My dad watches Death in Paradise and it's driven even him mad how the show's main plot is 'white british man comes and is the only person who can solve the mysteries of this colonized island, unlike the local black cops' which is kind of damning! However it's also very funny and Elly loves it, so here we are.

We picked up some new ones we might watch tonight too while I was trying to find some stuff - Dept Q (cold case show) and The Indian Detective (Canadian? show about a Canadian cop who goes to Mumbai to get involved in Mystery with his father) - just anticipating being done with Queens of Mystery and Death Valley soon because british seasons are a butterfly's sneeze in length.

Uh, what else. Got accepted into a Zinefest, have a lot of zines ready, why does it cost so much to print stuff oh my god why can't our home printer print double sided aaaaa. At least I'm 90% sure I won't make a ton of sales so I don't have to worry about being overstocked. I've got zines, I've got some stickers, and I'm gonna try to offload some of my ceramic animals unless Kevin the studio guy catches me and decides even though he's lectured me about how much I should charge for them before (he says 100, I say 10) he's going to actually enforce the no making things to sell rule (context: someone used the studio once as a factory for christmas ornaments and took up all the resources) - this is based less on actual fear of the rule because I know it's definitely not actually aimed at my use* and more on the fact Kevin is a chaos demon and I can never predict what he'll do for fun.

*I've asked a few times before and the studio guys go into a big oh I shouldn't worry because my stuff takes up so little room in the kiln that I probably use the least amount of any other user. My stuff is generally thumb size or smaller and in small batches.

Projecting

I meant to spend about five minutes on plant care and then proceeded to spend about an hour, instead, complete with running myself out of dirt. That's a bit how my weekend has gone, though? I've gotten a lot done.

I took a deep breath and pushed myself past one of my major mental blocks with archiving and it... wasn't bad? Like, I had bumped up against some very old stories that are... Listen, they were never good. And then I asked myself if I really wanted to archive them. Yes, I want them archived. Yes, I've posted them to mailing lists, to Geocities, to my own site, to AO3. I can post them to Neocities and DW. They will continue to be a part of what I've created.

I also reminded myself that I just have to archive them; I don't have to read them. I also wrote a couple of drabbles and then... also archived those! Super-easy, even though one needed a fandom page made. But super-easy! I like this.

Finished up MG Exia, who I totally didn't want to throw out a window multiple times last weekend, nope. He definitely had his moments, but overall I didn't hate the build. (Which is good because I'm going to be doing it a lot.)

I started on HG Sazabi, who will be a much-quicker no-frills build. I'm going to hold off on polls for a bit until I get through my own little to-do list. I still need to build the HG Calrea that got me back into this bullshit.

Caught up with [personal profile] purplehellebore for a birfday lunch and whatnot. Went to the home improvement store and did not buy a 9/16ths wrench. (But I had two people restraining me...) Got some paint from the nerd store. Finished up a prototype for a hollow book.

Shadowverse Worlds Beyond released the other day but the less said about that the better. We're already grousing on [community profile] mobilegames.

Fandom Fifty: #17

1991, and I was very much settled into my Gaming Group. Apparently I was managing to go to the theater more, as I opened 22 tabs, after skipping at least a dozen less memorable offerings. Hmm, gotta narrow this down. 12? Twelve is doable.

~ Toy Soldiers - Teenage rebellion against a hostage situation. Honestly loved the acting here.
~ Hudson Hawk - What is NOT to love about music-timed heists and Bruce Willis playing off Danny Aiello?
~ Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves - Honestly, when I rewatched this, I found it enjoyable but very much not definitive. Still, great cast.

~ The Rocketeer - Fun. Pure Fun. Also, watching the guys realize that was SARAH from Labyrinth amused the hell out of me.
~ Terminator 2: Judgment Day - +grits teeth+ Cameron knows how to make a sequel equal or better than the previous entry. Linda Hamilton is who sold me on this movie though.
~ Point Break - Before Brian and Dom got their hooks into me for Fed and Crook, these two... damn. Love them.

~ Showdown in Little Tokyo - ALL the warnings for this, especially violence against women. However. Brandon Lee and Dolph Lundgren offer up a great partnership, even as the yakuza and Japanese 'culture' references that frame the movie are... Hollywood to extreme.
~ The Addams Family - AWW YEAH, first limo event! LOL. K was driving for one of the local mafia and had use of the limo when it wasn't hired. Pack of 16-29 year old geeks rolling out to see this icon in a limo. Great times.
~ My Girl - So y'all remember when family friendly movies didn't shy away from handling death? Yeah. Completely unspoilered for this, and P ended up sobbing all over me.

~ Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country - Limo excursion. Some of us in ST uniform. I was at 90+ hours conscious, which made it an interesting experience.
~ Father of the Bride - As remakes go, this one rocked it. And I still love to watch it AND the sequel.
~ Fried Green Tomatoes - First entry in Mary Louise Parker is queer and breaks my heart. Also, if you have only seen the film, do yourself a favor and read the book too. They complement one another.

In Review

Ugh, it's been hot and going to get hotter. The next week is going to be suffering.

Monday, got an oil change. I like my new mechanic! The shop is affordable and honest to a fault. They did a fairly thorough inspection and flagged a couple of things and when I went to schedule taking care of one of them, they insisted it wasn't a safety issue and that I'd be much better off saving up the money (because it will be pricey) and they'll see how things look next oil change. (Car is a decade old and this is apparently more of a 'x is starting to show a bit of wear' not 'x is about to fail'. I would have done the repair! So yeaaah, honest possibly to their own detriment, lol.)

Tuesday & Wednesday were help the 'rents days. Went a little hard on Tuesday but that just made Wednesday easier. On Tuesday, I waited around for packages that didn't arrive (they did, later, but beyond my timeframe)... I have another on the way from Bandai and I love the path their packages take. They always scan at a facility in Arizona called Navajo Nation which I assume is located in the greater Navajo Nation somewhere. Anyway, since the packages are always Gundams/Gunpla, I keep imagining Gundams and pilots stopping to admire the American Southwest and learning a bit about it.

We're back to shuffling things around at work, including my sanity. It has become a 'we all need to work on things as a team' but there's still no second shift and nobody leaves me notes. So I work on what the fuck ever and then reiterate that I am not psychic, leave me notes.

Weekend is going to be some errands and catching up with a friend for their birfday. Still picking up some things for the airbrush and whatnot. I definitely need a hygrometer and I also realized that I forgot to get primer. ^^;;

I have (at least temporarily) removed my Transformative Works Permissions Statements after an incident. It feels kinda bad but the incident feels really bad so I'm just gonna take some time and sort out some psychic damage and greater feelings.

Soon Only He Would Remain

The Force was his slave, and it was flowing so strongly. All of his life, he had waited for this moment, when he would truly be the last master of it. There was no need to replace his underling, and the boy would be dead before that machinery ceased to function. He was the only one who would —

WHAT?!

NO!

It wasn't possible! He shrieked and lost control of the Force Lightning, but knew it was striking his puppet.

That traitor!

After all he'd done for him?!

His scream echoed in his own ears, all the way to the core.

Into A Bar: The Golden Girls/Designing Women

Title: The PFLAG Conference
Author: [personal profile] senmut
Prompt: Dorothy Zbornak goes into a bar and meets... Julia Sugarbaker (Designing Women)!
Fandoms: The Golden Girls / Designing Women
Word count: 587
Rating: General Audiences
Contents: The situation for support for Southern queers has not changed since the era of these shows and that is referenced here.

The PFLAG Conference

As far as conferences and political rallies went, Dorothy was glad this one seemed to be staying at a civil discourse. Not, she amended in her own thoughts, that she wasn't ready to blaze truth across narrow-minds in a hope of seeing people live better, stronger lives in the open. She had to stand up for all of her principles, and was glad that joining PFLAG had given her a new outlet to do so.

Still, it had been a long day, and while she wasn't given to drinking much, a nightcap would settle her muscles down, giving her a better chance for sleep in the hotel's luxurious bed. She slipped into more casual, but still classy, attire, picked up her clutch, and headed down to the bar. It might even give her a chance to mingle with others of like minds.

If she found some of different minds, she had a piece or two of her own she'd be able to give out.

Julia Sugarbaker had been brewing on a storm since early that morning. It was bad enough that Georgia didn't have a proper organization to help the young men and women suffering from vitriol and hate, but she'd run into one too many damned Yankees tossing around their patronizing looks about even attempting to get one set up!

She straightened out her blouse, adjusted the sleeve at the wrists, and then snatched up her purse rather than stay in this ridiculously ill-decorated hotel room. She'd seen a bar downstairs. A nice little cocktail hour would help bring her down from her anger, and leave her more likely to find the right words on where to tell the next New York organizer where they could stick their disbelief in gay rights for the South!

Dorothy had seen the brunette going into one of the conference rooms earlier in the day. The decided emphasis on how the woman sat at the bar next to her spoke of difficulties.

"You're here with the PFLAG conference, yes?" Dorothy asked after the woman had a mint julep in front of her, while playing with the straw in her Long Island Iced Tea.

"I am here attempting to convince them to invest in my geographical region instead of writing us all off under the heels of those — " The woman cut herself off completely, took a deep breath. "Yes," she answered instead. "Julia Sugarbaker."

Dorothy raised an eyebrow. "The Julie Sugarbaker who was thanked in Representative Sugarbaker's speech last week?"

Julia softened her stance. "You pay attention to Washington, I take it, ma'am?"

"Dorothy Zbornak. Trying to put more effort into my ideals these days.

"And yes. Helping keep my chapter informed of events, since I have more free time."

"Were you instrumental in organization, or did you step in later? And either way, would you be willing to share any tips? The idiot I spoke to today doesn't feel there is any room in Georgia for them."

Dorothy sighed. "There are so many places in Florida that need outreach, and we run into that there. Or upstate New York, because no, the entire state does not follow the city's lead," she agreed, sympathizing. "I would be glad to work with you, and talk about how to get the support you need."

Julia smiled broadly. "Then Ms. Zbornak, I am looking forward to getting to know you."

"Likewise. Someone willing to stand up when the deck is stacked that way is the kind of woman I'd like to know," Dorothy agreed.

Comms That Have Popped Up

I have seen [community profile] sunshine_revival wander by a couple of times and finally stopped to ask what exactly it was. It's hard to promote a community that has no details. ^^;; Anyway, a mod replied back that they "will be explaining more in the introduction post before the challenge starts but basically we will be providing two prompts for each challenge. One of the prompts will be geared towards journaling or reflection (mostly generic but one or two might be more fandom-oriented) and the other prompt will be for a creative option. Many of the creative prompts are toward writing, some are art. However it’s very casual so you could skip any challenge that doesn’t appeal or modify the prompt as you like!"

There's also [community profile] expandingfandom, a post-AO3 comm for these post-AO3 times... (I keep mentally parse it as Exploding Fandom for some reason.) I kid, to a degree. Maybe it's more of a pre-AO3 comm for these post-AO3 times. Anyway, as someone who does lots of comms and events on DW, I am all for more stuff not on AO3 and therefore more accessible to me, personally, a person who no longer posts on AO3. There's only an intro post so far; we'll see what happens.

Oh fuck oh no oh jesus

I messed up big time. Instead of movies, I started watching shows with my bff Elly. Next thing you know we're watching more shows. Whole series together.

I tried watching two new to me mysteries tonight and they were *so suited to her tastes* I had to stop the episodes and decide we would watch them together at a later date.

This is why I don't add sugar or milk to my coffee! I'm too afraid I won't be able to drink it again if I don't have the added ingredients on hand!

1990, [redacted a lot of depressing anecdata]. Let's just roll the credits, hmm? Nine movies because I was choosy... and honestly don't have much to say about movies of this year.

~ Tremors - AWW YEAH a hella good creature feature. To be honest? This was like catching old 50s B movies on TBS, because those creature features were my kind of camp horror comedy.
~ The Hunt for Red October - I can't remember much of this film, but there were some pretty people in it.
~ Ghost - +sighs+ Patrick and Whoopi, I loved. I am still on a fence about Demi's acting, but she's pretty.
~ Quigley Down Under - the movie that reinforced lessons I had begun studying due to "Beds are Burning" by Midnight Oil. It's also the movie that put Alan Rickman on my radar properly. I love his villainy here.
~ The Rescuers Down Under - Hmm, two Aussie based movies for me this year? MARAHUTE! Not quite mixing the adventure and scary like the first, but a DAMN GOOD FILM.
~ Predator 2 - So I enjoy the first. So much. BUT THIS?! This movie started solidifying actual lore for me (BLESS DARK HORSE COMICS) and the yautja in this one is BADASS.
~ Mermaids - A really sweet film, and the cast? +faints+ Hoskins, Cher, Ryder, Ricci? Excellent. A little angst and harm to children warning.
~ Hamlet - So I rather hate putting this on the list. And I know it is seriously panned. But honestly? Seeing this in the theater, watching EVERY ACTOR CHEW THE SCENERY? Made me delighted at an above the top performance. Just wish the fucker in the lead role wasn't... himself.
~ Kindergarten Cop - Sweet. Funny. Dramatic at parts. "It's naht a too-mah" Was surprised when I went back to find that his partner that was supposed to do the teaching and got sick was Iza from Clan of the Cave Bear.

Fave? Toss up between Predator 2 and Kindergarten Cop.
