Maybe it's my own bias speaking XD but honestly I think Mikaela defecting could be done without being cracky. Yeah, it's not canon, but... She's drawn in to the conflict by Sam, who is being attacked. Her side is pretty much chosen for her by circumstance. Sam repeatedly fails to do right by her, and then their relationship inexplicably ends. And she does have that criminal history! XD
So I do think it's possible to write a dark version of her that really is only out for Number One. It would have to be far longer than I'd want to bother with, but I think it's doable. Particularly if the 'Cons have some reason for grudgingly not squishing her. Which I think she's clever and resourceful enough to make sure they have, at least for a while.
